Château de Coppet

The Château de Coppet was the residence of Jacques Necker, Louis XVI’s finance minister, and his daughter Germaine de Staël, an opponent of Napoleon. Owned by the same family for nine generations, it can be visited on a guided tour, taking in furnished salons and a park facing Lake Geneva.

Main highlights

  • Madame de Staël’s home : her bedroom, personal belongings and original manuscripts
  • Family residence kept by the same family for nine generations, with its period furniture
  • Lakeside park with French formal gardens and views of Lake Geneva and the Alps

Overview

Coppet was founded around 1280 by Humbert IV of Thoire and Villars, and the castle is first mentioned in 1299. Built on 13th-century foundations, the building was transformed by its successive owners. In 1784, Jacques Necker, banker and finance minister to Louis XVI, acquired it.

The château later became the refuge of Germaine de Staël, the essayist and writer exiled from Paris by Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1805, back in Coppet, the only place she could live in Napoleonic Europe, she began writing Corinne, or Italy here. The estate has remained in the same family for nine generations.
