Main highlights

  • Swiss National Museum : the country’s history from the Enlightenment to the present day, told through authentic objects
  • Historic kitchen garden : around a hundred rare 18th-century varieties of fruit and vegetables
  • Period interiors : drawing rooms, library and bedrooms furnished as in the Age of Enlightenment

Overview

The Château de Prangins stands on the edge of the Vaud village of the same name, on the shores of Lake Geneva. This 1730s residence is the largest 18th-century château open to the public in Switzerland and is home to the French-speaking Swiss branch of the Swiss National Museum.

Successively a seigneury, a princely residence, a school and a private home, the château became a museum in 1998. It is one of the four institutions of the Swiss National Museum designated by the Federal Museums Act and showcases Swiss heritage as a whole.

What to see and do

The permanent exhibition traces the history of Switzerland from the Age of Enlightenment to the present day through authentic objects and period reconstructions. The château’s interiors reveal the aristocratic way of life of the 18th century : drawing rooms, a library and bedrooms with period furnishings. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.

The Historic Kitchen Garden is the largest historic kitchen garden in Switzerland. A replica of a typical 18th-century garden, it brings together around a hundred rare varieties of flowers, fruit and vegetables grown in the region three centuries ago. In the gardener’s house, an interpretation centre links four emblematic plants to contemporary issues.

For families, the museum offers storytelling, treasure hunts, craft workshops and trails, as well as birthday party activities.
