Overview

Oron Castle is first mentioned in 1137. The earliest buildings date from the 12th century, but the structure largely took its present form in the 13th and 15th centuries. It was home to the Lords of Oron, then came under Bernese rule, before being acquired by a heritage preservation association.

Its towers, keep and walls recall its military role. The interiors, mostly fitted out in the 18th century, reveal its transformation into a prestigious residence. The castle is one of the well-preserved examples of castle architecture in French-speaking Switzerland.
