Overview

Fort de Chillon is a Swiss military fortification built between 1941 and 1943 as part of the National Redoubt, the defensive strategy adopted during the Second World War. It belongs to a network of fortifications tasked with protecting the country’s main transport routes. It is a largely underground structure, carved into the rock above the medieval castle.

Its mission was to control the Simplon road, which runs along Lake Geneva between Italy and Switzerland, and to monitor rail and lake traffic. It remained in service and classified as a military secret until the 1990s, after which it was decommissioned and partly opened to the public.

Things to see and do

The tour follows a network of tunnels extending several hundred metres into the mountain. You walk through artillery casemates, observation posts and firing chambers. Technical installations such as ventilation, generators and gas filters show how the garrison was meant to be self-sufficient during a prolonged conflict.

The fort retains some of its original weaponry, including fortress guns and machine guns. You can also see the system of camouflaged loopholes that allowed defenders to control the approaches without being seen. A collection of uniforms, communications equipment and soldiers’ everyday items rounds off the visit.

Themed guided tours cover Swiss defensive strategy, soldiers’ life inside the fort and how these fortifications were built. They are often led by former servicemen.
