Overview

Chillon Castle stands on a rocky islet on the shore of Lake Geneva, near Montreux. First mentioned in the 11th century, the fortress was for centuries a residence of the Counts of Savoy and a checkpoint on the trade route between Italy and northern Europe. The complex comprises 25 buildings and three inner courtyards surrounded by ramparts.

Protected on one side by the lake and on the other by a steep cliff, the castle was considered impregnable. Its fame also owes much to Lord Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon”, inspired by François Bonivard, a political prisoner held in its dungeons in the 16th century.

Things to see and do

The tour takes you through more than 40 rooms. The Great Hall, the heart of medieval social life, retains its 13th-century timber roof frame. The Duke’s Chamber is decorated with 14th-century murals, the chapel with well-preserved Gothic frescoes, and the medieval kitchens reveal everyday life of the period.

The rock-cut underground vaults are among the most impressive parts of the castle. Here you will see Bonivard’s dungeon, with its Gothic columns and the pillar to which the prisoner was chained for six years.

The castle also offers events and historical re-enactments : craft demonstrations, scenes in period costume and workshops for children. A multilingual audio guide and guided tours enhance the visit.
