Overview

Espace Arlaud occupies the former Collège Arlaud, built in the early 20th century in the centre of Lausanne. The school was named after Pierre Arlaud, a former mayor of the city who bequeathed his fortune to public education. The building welcomed pupils for several decades.

In 2008, following major renovation work, it reopened as a municipal exhibition space. The understated façade, typical of public buildings of the period, has been preserved. The interior was redesigned : the former classrooms became flexible spaces that adapt to each exhibition layout.

What to see and do

The centre is devoted first and foremost to photography. Its temporary exhibitions explore different facets of the medium, from documentary to fine-art work. They showcase both established photographers and emerging talent, with particular attention to the French-speaking Swiss scene : portraits, reportage, conceptual series and installations.

The venue also hosts contemporary visual arts projects, including video, installation and digital art. Spread over several levels, the galleries offer around 400 m² of exhibition space. The generous volumes and high ceilings make it possible to display large-format works and large-scale installations.

The exhibition design is understated, with white walls and carefully planned lighting that does justice to the images. Explanatory labels accompany each exhibition. Guided tours and meetings with the artists are organised around the exhibitions.

Practical information

Getting there : right in the centre of Lausanne, near the Palais de Rumine. Take the m2 metro to Riponne-Maurice Béjart, a one-minute walk away. From the CFF railway station, allow 15 minutes on foot.

Accessibility : the building is accessible to people with reduced mobility, with a lift serving all levels.
